Evie Dell had a kangaroo for a pet. Her name was Cookie, and she and Evie liked each other very much. When the Dells first got her, the people in the small California town where they lived were surprised at such a pet. But they soon got used to it. And they were always interested in her because she was a wonderful, remarkable kangaroo.
Cookie had once been a zoo kangaroo and had learned many things from people because she had seen and heard so many every day. The Dells had bought her when the town had to give up its zoo. They saw right away that she was unusually friendly and smart. But just how smart and friendly Cookie was they couldn’t know then. They found that out later.
The Dells had built her a little house on the lawn beside their own house in Valley Town. There she lived very quietly at first. She quickly became a great pet to the whole family though, and especially to Evie, who was seven years old.
Evie used to peek into Cookie’s house sometimes. And she was surprised how neat and orderly she always kept it.
Cookie liked Evie, and often played ball or other games with her. Sometimes Cookie went with Evie to play with other children in the neighborhood. She even went to the near-by store with Evie when she had to shop for her mother. Usually Evie let her hold the money because Cookie never lost things. The kangaroo kept the coins in the handy private pocket she had in her front.
     Once when Mrs. Dell was in a store with them, Cookie made it clear that she wanted a lace-edged handkerchief that lay on the counter. So Mrs. Dell bought it and gave it to her. After that Cookie always wore it tucked into her private pocket with the lace edge showing. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
